Welcome to the City of Hagerstown's
250th Anniversary Celebration!

Although settlers had lived in the area since the 1730s, Hagerstown officially came to being when Jonathan Hager platted lots along an old Indian trail in 1762. Known both as "Hager's Town" and "Elizabethtown" (named for Hager's wife), the settlement grew quickly and Hager successfully arranged for his town to be designated the seat of the government when Washington County was created in 1776, the year after his death. In 1813, a municipal charter was awarded by the state, and the name "Hagerstown" was official adopted.
